Racal rebounds from disappointment as Raytheon wins ASTOR

Article Abstract:

Racal Defence Electronics (RDE) announced several new contracts that should help the company recollect itself from the disappointing outcome of the UK's Airborne Stand-off Radar (ASTOR) project. The company was not selected for the ASTOR contract, which was given to Raytheon Systems Ltd, but may be included in the Raytheon team at the last hour. Among the company's new contracts is the provision of a Joint Tactical Information Distribution System to improve the capabilities of UK's combat aircraft.

TMS reaping the benefits of the learning curve

Article Abstract:

Thomson Marconi Sonar is reaping the benefits f its multidmestic approach and consequent cross-fertilization, enhanced by innovative technology and management. The company was established in 1996 by the combined sonar units of Thomson-CSF and the former GEC Marconi. It has since become a joint venture of Thomson-CSF and BAE Systems. Its investment is aimed at meeting new requirements not only in terms of new performance but with products that are easier to operate and maintain and are affordable.

Rolls-Royce details new division aims

Article Abstract:

Rolls-Royce PLC has expanded its marine engine business to inlcude other marine vessel systems such as electric ship propulsion. The naval section of its marine engine division, which focuses on submarines and surface ships, looks to provide electric power not only for propusion but for other services as well. The company is already developing a permanent magnetic motor under a contract awarded by the UK Ministry of Defense.
