Controversy looms over FY 2001 defense plan

Article Abstract:

US President Bill Clinton's proposed defense budget of $291.1 billion for fiscal year 2001 represents the first real growth in defense spending in a decade. Adjusting for inflation, the 2001 military spending proposal is more than 1% higher than the $277.9 billion budget authority for fiscal year 2000. Military procurement accounts for $60.3 billion of the total, which when adjusted for inflation falls short of the $65 billion target set by the Joint Chiefs of Staff five years ago.
