Patrolling the globe

Article Abstract:

The US Coast Guard is building international relationships by deploying its people overseas to conduct security inspections and training. The Coast Guard had nearly 600 people deployed overseas, among which 250 members are in Middle East, 116 are on the medium-endurance cutter Bear deployed with the Navys 6th Fleet and 170 are with the high-endurance cutter Jarvis deployed to Southwest Asia as on June 30, 2005.

Coastal cutters: Next-generation patrol boat to be made of composite materials

Article Abstract:

Composite materials will be used instead of steel and aluminum for constructing the Coast Guard's next generation of patrol boats. The use of composite materials for constructing the patrol boats will assist in reducing the amount of time spent on maintenance work like the scraping, painting, and repairing of the hull and could also offer advancements in service life, capability, technology and speed.

Thwarting seaborne threats: Layered defenses are essential

Article Abstract:

The efforts of the U.S. Coast Guard to protect the United States from a seaborne terrorist attack by building a layered defense that starts overseas and becomes a concerted effort at home are reviewed. Funding constitutes a major challenge for the Coast Guard as it is aging and has become a technologically obsolete fleet, which requires replacing.
