People-trafficking erodes security in former Soviet states

Article Abstract:

Former Soviet Union states have made it clear that illegal migration and human trafficking for sexual and other purposes will have serious and growing implications for transnational security. The phenomenon of human trafficking and illegal migration helps make organized crime and terrorist groupings increasingly formidable threats and provides materials and other assets that can be used in illegal activates, which pose a direct threat to nation states.

Russia's drugs crisis

Article Abstract:

Increase in the consumption of hard drugs and the use of Russian territory for transit to Europe has led to growing and evolving national security threat from the international drugs trade to Russia. Russia's role is especially important as a route opiates from Afghanistan, especially that traditional sources via the Middle East and Turkey are coming under pressure.

Insurgents and traffickers build alliances in Caucasus

Article Abstract:

Russia has claimed for years that insurgents and serious organized criminal gangs in the Caucasus are building mutually beneficial alliances. Although the drug-trafficking routes of an insurgent-criminal alliance based on the Central Asian model can be stopped, Moscow still seems ill placed to combat it.
