Power handover: Nigerian elections a important step for reform

Article Abstract:

Nigerian presidential and legislative elections scheduled for April 2007 herald the first transfer of civilian power since country became independent in 1960. The elections should lead to stability, enable the process of economic reform to continue and further entrench civilian rule, but the political instability and widespread unrest are likely, if the results are close and if powerful elements refuse to accept the results.

Central Asia's substantial energy reserves are gaining importance and the competition is revolving around the export of resources out of the region through existing and future pipeline networks. The number of agreements and projects and also future geopolitical competition over the region's energy resources are examined.
