RN faces swingeing fleet cut options

Article Abstract:

A report states it is likely that the U.K. could withdraw a number of Royal Navy (RN) and Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) vessels from front-line operations and place in deep reserve. While the Ministry of Defense (MoD) has stated that ministerial decisions on the forward defense program would be taken in the first quarter of 2007, it is understood that the MoD is in the process of assessing the extent of the savings that could be realized by placing selected ships at extended readiness.

UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is looking afresh at its strategy to sustain the Royal Navy's (RN's) maritime surface combatant capability under a new 'Pathfinder' initiative, which involves the participation of both industry and MoD stakeholders, the. The initiative is intended to produce a road map for the delivery of an affordable and sustainable Joint Maritime Surface Combatant Capability.

Rand urges UK MoD to invest to submarine industry

Article Abstract:

A report by the RAND Europe thinktank has recommended that the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) should commit to future submarine planning to ensure the survival of the UK's submarine design and industrial base. RAND's findings also suggested greater collaboration between the UK and the US submarine programmes and advocated plans to sustain a core submarine design resource.
