The long-term and short-term plans of the US Navy (USN) and US Marine Corps were outlined in the US Department of Defense' Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) and President George W. Bush's fiscal year 2007 defense budget. Some of the programmes highlighted the QDR acquisition of Littoral Combat ships, facilitating sea basing with future Maritime Preposition Force ships, and increasing the number of independent strike groups from 19 to 36.
