Seapower/Coast Guard

Article Abstract:

The Coast Guard, as one of the five US Armed Services branches, represents one of the most unique intruments of national defense. The Coast Guard integrates military, civilian law enforcement and humanitarian capabilities. Its primary responsibilities are to protect civilians, the environment, US economic and security interests in US ports, inland waterways, along the coasts, on international waters or in any maritime region where US interests may be imperiled.

The strategic goals of the US Coast Guard are maritime safety, national defense, maritime security, maritime mobility, and protection of natural resources. It has an active-duty force of 35,000, an 8,000-person reserve, and a 5,500-person civilian workforce.
