European aircraft carrier programmes

Article Abstract:

The most interesting and indeed intriguing aspect of the worldwide naval shipbuilding scene is that the four most important European navies are all simultaneously pursuing construction programmes for a new generation of aircraft carriers as their new capital ships. The new breed of European carriers are all conceived and designed after the end of the Cold War, with the accompanying radical shift in the main mission of aircraft carriers away from achieving and maintaining sea control and onwards delivering air strikes mostly against targets ashore.
