Southeast Asia strategic framework

Article Abstract:

Southeast Asia's existing strategic framework suggests that the likelihood of military conflicts in the region will remain low in the near term despite negative developments in Indonesia. However, the Assn of South East Asian Nations threatens to be weakened by tensions within its membership resulting from some aspects of the international intervention in East Timor, Indonesia. While military modernization programs throughout the region except South Korea have been indefinitely suspended, they ought to be resumed in the medium or long term to prevent a major regional military imbalance favoring the People's Republic of China.
