Southern Thai insurgency gains fresh momentum

Article Abstract:

High-level political denial, attacks and their aftermath has provided considerable new information on the Islamo-separatist insurgency and exacerbated security agencies. Insurgents have established a broad range of low-intensity, low-risk tactics in the five distinct areas of assassinations, bombings, arson, raids aimed at seizing arms and pin-prick attacks on military installations that the security forces have found almost impossible to counter.

Thai Prime Minister reshuffles southern command structure

Article Abstract:

Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is revamping the southern command structure by removing the military official coordinating the government response to the escalating separatist insurgency in the southern provinces. A new Southern Border Provinces Peace building Board, a strategic policy and planning group headed by Chidchai Vanasatidya will backstop the southern operation's command in Bangkok.

Resilient Abu Sayyaf resists military pressure

Article Abstract:

The Philippine Army faces an unexpectedly difficult task in neutralizing the Abu Sayyaf Group, which is putting up stiff resistance in the southern Philippines. A series of operations is carried out by the Armed Forces of the Philippines to get rid of this Abu Sayyaf Group although it may prove to be a difficult task for the armed forces.
