Squadron milestone for Merlin

Article Abstract:

The Royal Navy (RN) of the United Kingdom commissioned on Dec. 1, 1998, the 700M Naval Air Squadron (NAS), which began its use of of the new Merlin HM Mk1 ship-borne anti-submarine/anti-surface (ASW/AsuW) warfare helicopter. The 700M NAS, which was reformed as the Intensive Flying Trials Unit (IFTU) for Merlin, will undergo activities such as flying operations and the validation of the one-pilot-operation need of the RN. The UK RN is procuring Merlin, which is based on Agusta and GKN Westland's EH-101 aircraft, from Lockheed Martin ASIC to substitute for the Sea King HAS.6 ASW helicopter.

The U.K.'s inquiry into the arrest and detention of 15 naval personnel by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Navy (IRGN) March 2007 is discussed. The circumstances that led to the incident and the important aspects under investigation are also presented.
