Stop the presses! Too much data, not enough time

Article Abstract:

The flood of data made available by information technology to the field of maritime warfare makes one wonder if such influx of data is truly beneficial for the war effort. A marine officer, who had served in liaison positions in various departments of the US Marine Corps, believes that such a large influx of superfluous data has anesthetized the Marines to the really important things.

Knowledge management: What is it, and how can the Marine Corps employ it

Knowledge management (KM), the management of knowledge using the latest technology to allow the sharing of knowledge at any time and any place, involves various technical components. Some scenarios are presented to illustrate how the Marine Corps can adopt 21st century Information Technology (IT) by successful collaborative technology adoption.

The author describes the advantages that the Marine Corps. would realize by switching their operating systems for personal computers from Microsoft Windows to Linux. The author stresses the low cost, flexibility and security of Linux, an open source operating system over the closed system offered by Microsoft.
