Submarine batteries: Are improvements possible?

Article Abstract:

Batteries have been part of ships and submarines since the advent of electrical systems but even in the 21st century, this lead acid battery (LAB) remains very much the same as it was earlier and operators have long accepted the disadvantages of using LABs. Some ways of improving battery technology, with the view to safety and performance are described, so as to respond to the quest for reliable batteries.
