Netherlands proves SMART-L extended long range mode in live tests off Hawaii

Article Abstract:

The Royal Netherlands air-defense and command frigate HrMs Tromp (F-803), during the live-firing tests held off Hawaii at the end of 2006, proved the ability of a modified Thales SMART-L multibeam three-dimensional (3-D) volume search radar to detect and track targets representing theatre ballistic missiles (TBMs). The radar's instrumented range was arbitrarily chosen to 480 km for the purpose of the trials, but there seem no obstacles to further extend it to 800 or 1,000 km.
