Superstealth submarines for the next century

Article Abstract:

The US Navy has renamed its New SSN class of attack submarines as the VIRGINIA class. The New SSN will abandon the ASW and strike missions of the Cold War and is touted as the only US Navy submarine which will devoted to littoral warfare. Compared to its predecessor the SEAWOLF, the New SSN will be smaller in size, weight and weapons capability. Its crew, propulsion plant and costs will also be lower. The production cost of the SEAWOLF is about $2.4 billion compared to the New SSN's $1.6 to 1.7 billion.

Subamrine developments: new weapons - new roles

Article Abstract:

New developments in nuclear military submarine technology are focused on weapons and in areas that provide multi-mission flexibility. New weapons, such as torpedoes and land attack missiles, have significantly increased nuclear submarines' combat and self-defense capabilities. Advances in sonars, hydrodynamics and underwater navigational technologies are allowing nuclear submarines to perform various missions, including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.

Superstealth submarines for the next century

Article Abstract:

The new, Virginia-Class of attack submarines (SSN) has been placed into Navy service. It is smaller and features a more compact weapons capability smaller propulsion plant smaller crew and lower cost compared to its predecesor, the Seawolf. It is the only submarine designed for stealthy, littoral warfare and the first to carry a formal design requirement for non-acoustic quieting. Only one or two Virginia-Class SSNs are expected to be produced annually.
