ACE in the hull

Article Abstract:

General Electric Co (GE) and Honeywell Inc in Sep 2000 were awarded a three-year, $196-million contract under the US Army's Abrams/Crusader Common Engine (ACE) development program. The contractors will develop LV100-5 gas-turbine engines designed to replace the Perkins CV-12 diesel engines installed in the current Crusader prototypes. Work on the ACE LV100-5 is being undertaken at GE's facility in Lynn, MA, and Honeywell's plant in Phoenix, AZ. The contract calls for the development, production and testing of 13 engines for the Abrams program and 11 for Crusader.

Expanding the mission envelope

Article Abstract:

Lockheed is studying the feasibility of a C-130 Floatplane under a 1996 contract from the Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC). The C-130 Floatplane, designed to transport a 20,000-payload at 300 knots cruise speed over an unrefueled range of from 800 nmi to 1,200 nmi, is envisioned to provide the Special Operations Forces with a quick insertion into and getaway from the coastal strike area. The Floatplane could also found use in counterdrug, search-and-rescue, naval at-sea resupply and mine warfare/mine countermeasures operations. A Lockheed program said the study should be finished by the start of Fiscal Year 1999.
