The JMSDF's 2006 Navy Days

Article Abstract:

The 24th edition of the Navy Days of the Japanese Maritime Self Defence Forces (JMSDF) was conducted from 23 October to 29 October 2006 in Sagami Bay, off Yokosuka, Japan. These Navy Days enable JMSDF to allow the public to embark onboard the warships such as JDS 'Yaeshio' (Oyashio class submarine) and the destroyer JDS 'Takanami', thus highlighting the capability of Japan to handle regional threats including ballistic missiles and overseas missions.

MOST provides NATO Force Protection (FP) training

Article Abstract:

The Belgian/Netherlands Mine Countermeasure (MCM) Operational Sea Training (MOST) provides the Force Protection (FP) training that emphasizes on realistic asymmetric threat, training both at individual ship level up to units within a task group. MOST has implemented this FP-package for the first time during NATO's Standing Naval Mine Counter Measure Group 1 (SNMCMG) visit to the Naval Base of Zeebrugge in January 2006.

Capt Ilmars Lesinskis, Commander-in-Chief of the Latvian Navy discusses the challenges of modernization implicit in his country's membership of NATO. The main focus will be on acquiring the optimal level of competencies, technology and organisational structure as allowed for by the Ministry of Defence and the government.
