Article Abstract:

Russias' two aviation giants VPK MAPO and Sukhoi have suffered in recent years as a result of weak domestic orders and worldwide economic crisis. The two companies were also weakened by internal struggles between rival management factions. However, the aerospace companies have shown brighter prospects with some positive developments in the domestic and export markets which have resulted in remarkable performance in 1998 for both MAPO and Sukhoi, which is expected to continue onto 1999/2000.

Dmitri S Kiva, the First Deputy General Designer of Antonov, said that it is possible that an An-70 derivative could become the standard medium-lift military transport aircraft of certain Western European countries. Kiva added that the An-70 fully meets Western European specifications and has been designed using the latest digital design technology. For instance, the wing of the An-70 had been designed with the aid of computers.
