Article Abstract:

The Army's origins go back to Jun 14, 1775, when the fledgling Continental Congress created military regiments and commissioned George Washington to command these troops and existing colonial militia units. The seal of the Dept of the Army, previously called the War Dept, features the motto 'This We'll Defend.' This slogan is apt, as it pithily expresses the enduring willingness of US soldiers to give much of themselves to protect and preserve liberty, freedom and democracy, animated by the Army's core value of respect for the individual.

It is reported that one of the greatest Army traditions began two centuries ago, when Captains Merriwether Lewis and William Clark formed their Army expedition to explore the new lands added to the United States by the Louisiana Purchase.
