Operational design; operational design provides a blueprint for plan development

Article Abstract:

A Marine Corps commander makes use of operational design to communicate a decision to higher command, as well as to subordinates. The success of a specific mission may also be measured by comparing the results with the initial operational design.

The common operational picture; it is important that everyone 'sees' the same battlefield

Article Abstract:

The US Marine Corps makes use of a 'common operational picture' in order to communicate to all concerned the elements of an operation or mission. The problems and procedures inherent in establishing a common operational picture are discussed.

Knowledge; knowing what to do, when to do it, and with what weapons is crucial

The terms 'knowledge, and 'knowledge-based' are widely used, but little has been done to define them. It is important to agree on knowledge standards, and then to apply those standards to information and data.
