Airpower gains in the doctrine wars

Article Abstract:

Joint Publication 3-01, or the 'Joint Doctrine for Countering Air and Missile Threats,' is considered to be the US Air Force's most important political achievement in the 1990s. The document provides a strategy for counterair operations that to a great extent reflects an Air Force approach. It defines counterair operations to encompass offensive strikes against enemy air threats as well as defensive operations. It took seven years to draft the publication, prolonged by interservice rivalry, which was evident in the deletion of words not favorable to a particular service.

The halt phase hits a bump: the Air Force and the Army square off over warfighting approach

Article Abstract:

The method of implementation of the halt phase military tactic is an area of disagreement between the Air Force and the Army. The Air Force believes its ability to stop adversaries with air power is more efficient than waiting for ground troops to enter an area. The Army believes joint use of its forces and air power would be effective.

In the shadow of MAD

Article Abstract:

The concept of 'assured destruction,' promulgated by 1960s Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara was cleverly dramatized by Donald G. Brennan of the Hudson Institute in New York in 1969. Brennan added the word 'mutual' because neither the U.S. or the Soviet Union would survive an all-out atomic attack. Exploration of the defense policy is presented.
