The making of a World War II battalion commander

Article Abstract:

A Battalion commander who was in charge of the battalion right from the activation stage to the deactivation stage at the end of World War II describes how a mix of inexperience and youth brought about astonishing results in the European theatre. He believes that leadership qualities was the basic factor in his winning allocates during the building of floating Bailey bridge and the fixed bridge over the river Moselle at Toul in record time.

Evolving roles of the battalion XO in the host nation operations

Article Abstract:

The 2nd Squadron, 6th Air Cavalry, conducted the first gunnery by a U.S. unit in the Czech Republic whose main effort was afforded significant autonomy by higher headquarters to plan and execute the mission. The squadron executive officers (XOs) direct involvement in contracting, environmental safeguards, interpreter utilization, and public affairs and civil military involvement broadened the scope of responsibility throughout the gunnery.

A battalion commander, in an after-action review, describes his command, and what he would have done differently. One of the primary changes would involve offering guidance and reviewing the command philosophy every six month.
