Training on the virtual battlefield

Article Abstract:

Project Synthetic Forces Express was the largest military simulation exercise ever conducted when it was implemented in Jan 1998. Two computer supercenters were used by more than 10 technical experts, who programmed and managed the simulation of 66,239 vehicles. The project demonstrated the use of distributed interactive simulation (DIS), which is a concept that is having a major impact on the manner by which military training is conducted. The potential training benefits of DIS are well known by the world's leading military forces. DIS in the US has signalled the imminent demise of the use of stand-alone simulators as a training method.
