Tricare goes nationwide

Article Abstract:

The Defense Dept's Tricare health benefits package for armed services employees has finally been launched nationwide. However, the program has drawn criticism from many beneficiaries. Their concerns primarily revolve around program funding, slow claims processing, inflexible requirements for pre-authorization for care, point-of-service charges and continuity of care. Tricare is a triple-option health benefits package. These options include Tricare Prime, which is a managed care type of plan, Tricare Extra, which is a preferred provider option, and Tricare Standard, which is the old CHAMPUS fee-for-service system.

Ryan hits funding shortfalls

Article Abstract:

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen Michael E. Ryan has opined that the US is seriously underfunding air power. He argued that the problem of insufficient funds, which hampered military readiness during the beginning of the Korean War in 1950, is the same problem afflicting the nation's armed services in 2000. Ryan also noted that budgets which have been so tight for a number of years have made it considerably difficult for Air Force to re-organize itself for the post-Cold war era.

AEF development on track

Article Abstract:

The Air Force is on schedule to transition to a new era of Aerospace Expeditionary Forces (AEF) after completing eight AEF cycles. The biggest challenges to AEF implementation in the field appear to be training, preparing and deploying as trained teams in groups called Unit Type Codes. Furthermore, the predictability of the AEF experience continues to be uneven. Air Force leaders are looking at crew ratios to help reduce the strain on low-density, high-demand units.
