U.S. Air Force Material Command

Article Abstract:

The profile of Gen. Gregory S. Martin is presented who was chosen to head the Air Force Material Command (AFMC) at a time when US troops faced increasing threats in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. He is known as "Speedy" during his piloting days, and the General today is mainly concerned with the operational challenges that commanders and their troops face and he emphasizes the importance of understanding front-line needs.

Dollars and sense

Article Abstract:

The problems encountered by the US Special Operations Command (SOCom) as a result of private security firms luring their experienced troops with offers of high-paying jobs, and the steps taken by SOCom to arrest this development, are discussed. The exodus comes at a time when the size, budget and missions of SOCom are increasing with a view to augmenting the size of the command from 49,000 to 52,000 forces.

Air Force Maj. Gen. Charles Dunlap's essay on air power 'America's Asymmetric Advantage' is reviewed. Dunlap's essay has offensive and defensive components as is evident from his attacks on the unnamed opponents of air power and his defense of the utility, power and precision of modern air power assets.
