US Coast Guard organization and missions

Article Abstract:

The US Coast Guard is a military, multimission, maritime service within the Department of Homeland security (DHS), one of the five US armed services with core roles to protect the public, the environment and US economic and security interests on international waters. The Coast Guard operates along 95,000 miles of US coastline, throughout 3.4 million square miles of exclusive economic zones, in 361 domestic ports and in maritime regions of importance to the US around the world.

Aquidneck probes Iraqi shipwreckers for arms, spies

Article Abstract:

The U.S. Coast Guard has sent 11 cutters and approximately 1,300 personnel to the Mediterranean Sea and Persian Gulf, which is the largest overseas deployment since Vietnam, to support the Operation Iraqi Freedom. The missions supported by the Coast Guard's Mediterranean Forces and Persian Gulf Forces during the war, which were mostly probing Iraqi shipwrecks for arms and spies, are described.
