US administration opposes 'soft landing' for Cuba

Article Abstract:

The U.S. commerce secretary Carlos Gutierrez stated that the government has no intention of lifting the 45-year-old ban against Cuba or of initiating a dialogue with the acting Cuban president Raul Castro. Gutierrez comments are part of a coordinated effort by the U.S. administration to reiterate a tough stance toward Cuba's communist rule after the latest incapacitation of President Fidel Castro.

Arrests highlight Cuba's political tensions

Police beat and arrested a group of student rebels in a Roman Catholic Church of Santiago. This was likely to be an unplanned local police operation conducted without Central government approval and has caused political tension in Cuba.

US report questions Iran's nuclear ambitions
