Pentagon clears SM-3 ballistic missile sale to Japan

Article Abstract:

Pentagon cleared the sale of Raytheon's Standard Missile 3 (SM-3) Block 1A to Tokyo, in early June 2006, that helped Japan's nascent sea-based Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) forces to take a step closer to an engagement capability. SM-3 marked the first export sale of the missile, which would arm the Maritime Self Defence Force's four Kongou-class air warfare destroyers.
