Virtual reality steers carrier procurement

Article Abstract:

The UK Ministry of Defence's Procurement Executive has conducted a program to determine whether low-cost, off-the-shelf software can be used in the simulation of its future carrier project (CVF). The program, named Project VITESSE, is examining methods in which future weapons platforms are designed, built, tested and operated. Among the issues which the VITESSE CVF study has examined are the number of aircraft sorties for a particular platform configuration, landing and takeoff operations during weapons operations or in bad weather and the speed in which aircraft can be stowed below deck and preparedness operations.;

Horizon sinks, PAAMS flies

Article Abstract:

Italy, the UK and France have dropped plans to manufacture 22 Common New- Generation Frigates (CNGF), designated under the 8-billion-pound-sterling Project Horizon. However, the 1.2-billion-pound-sterling Principal Anti- Air Missile System, the principal warfare system of CNGF, has seen favorable developments as indicated by the July 1999 agreement among the three participants regarding the terms and conditions of combining the Franco-Italian EUROSAM GIE and UK principal contractor UKAMS.

VT unveils flexible OPV alternative

Article Abstract:

Vosper Thornycroft has introduced its new offshore patrol vessel (OPV) concept for Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) management. The 72-m multirole vessel is built around a large cargo deck designed to carry purpose-built containers for storage of equipment for EEZ and other operations. Among its uses are for anti-pollution work, disaster relief operations, medical support, fisheries protection, scientific/hydrographic research and ant- smuggling operations.
