Virtual reality extends to USW

Article Abstract:

A distributed, real-time undersea warfare (USW) simulation, designated the Synthetic Environment Tactical Integration project, is currently being developed by the US Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport via the incorporation of onboard USW trainers and simulated acoustic environments, along with virtual targets and weapons. Monitoring of virtual torpedo and target telemetry is facilitated at Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center range by underwater and airborne tracking systems.

Joint strike fighter competition heats up

Article Abstract:

The Joint Strike Fighter propulsion management team of Lockheed Martin has successfully tested its initial short take-off/vertical landing (STOVL) engine in its Pratt & Whitney facilities. The engine, called the FX662, was able to successfully complete two STOVL conversions in an operation using a shaft-driven fan given by Rolls-Royce. Boeing reported that it has achieved a number of JSF program requirements that have improved the performance and supportability of other STOVL variants.

Report highlights analytical shortfalls of ASW assessment and resource allocation

Article Abstract:

The 1997 assessment by the US Navy of its anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities was described by the US Government Accounting Office (GAO) as deficient, especially in the modelling and simulation aspects. The GAO report was particularly critical of the inadequacy in simulating acoustic and littoral environment conditions, which are currently considered to pose the most possible danger.
