Article Abstract:

Foreign area officers (FAOs) of the US military who link US forces to the local populace played a vital role during the US Navy's relief work for victims of the tsunami that hit Southeast Asia in December 2004. Following this and other similar experiences, the US Navy and the Marine Corps are upgrading their FAO programs and creating a distinct corps of foreign area experts who will be offered viable career paths to more fully exploit their talents.
