Putting people first in ship design

Article Abstract:

The US Navy and US Coast Guard are taking bold steps to apply the principles of human systems integration (HSI) in the design of their new ships and systems This change will place the sailors at center stage with a renewed emphasis on the functions, tasks and skills needed to optimize total-systems performance and their main goals are to achieve the highest levels of warfighting readiness with smaller, optimally sized crews at a more affordable, lower total ownership cost.

The U.S. Navy's new vision outlined in Sea Power 21 is based on three core concepts and competencies for the sea service such as Sea Strike, Sea Shield and Sea Basing. The Navy's entirely new surface combatant ship, the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) assures access, projection power, presence and defence overseas as well as protection of homeland.

Modular combatant transitions from concept to reality

Article Abstract:

Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) is successful and is known as fast, modular, reconfigurable combatant systems. The LCS are planned for three focused missions- mine warfare (MIW), anti-submarine warfare (ASM) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) to get the assured access in the littoral or coastal regions of the world.

"Putting people first in ship design" - this is an interesting idea because previously, living spaces were accounted for last and designed around the equipment and machinery.
