Vosper Thornycroft preferred bidder for survey vessels

Article Abstract:

Vosper Thornycroft (VT) is confident of signing a contract for the supply of two survey vessels to the UK Royal Navy. The company, which is still negotiating with the UK Ministry of Defence, has been chosen as the preferred bidder for the contract estimated to be worth more than 100 million pounds sterling ($157 million). Southampton, UK-based VT will act as the prime contractor for the two vessels that are expected to be delivered by 2002.

Vosper redundancy notices shock

Article Abstract:

Southampton, UK-based Vosper Thornycroft (VT) has issued protective redundancy notices to more than half of its 1,200 shipbuilding workforce in Oct 2000. The notices for 650 employee will not take effect until early 2001, and not then if contracts for additional work can be secured. VT CEO Martin Jay declared that the notices were a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding its overall prospects.

First metal cut for Scorpene

Article Abstract:

Direction des Constructions Navales (DCN) and Spanish Bazan have started the construction for the Scorpene submarine for Chile, following long and hard negotiations with the customer. The Scorpene, which is the first submarine project to undergo computer-aided designing (CAD), features the SUBTICS (Submarine Tactical Integrated Combat System) as its combat system, and was designed to perform anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare operations, as well as special and open-sea operations. The companies expect to land other export agreements with the Scorpene, which runs at maximum speeds of 20kt and dives at depths of over 300m.
