Warner takes heat; retiree and survivor gains; will the reserves get tricare?; New VA shortfall..

Article Abstract:

The military widows and service associations criticized Senator John Warner, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, for his amendment to the 2006 defense authorization bill. Retirees and surviving spouses are complaining, as the Warner amendment would direct the Veterans' Disability Benefits Commission to examine the Survivor Benefit Plan-Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (SBP-DIC) offset in the context of a comprehensive review of veterans' disability compensation.

Unexpected gains: Items in the $441.5 billion budget: Boosting Tricare's fees

Article Abstract:

The 2006 defense authorization bill includes few unexpected provisions like opening Tricare Reserve Select, a water downed version of Tricare Standard, to all drilling reservists and their families. The defense bill also authorizes new spending of $441.5 billion in 2006 and some of the initiatives that were endorsed or rejected earlier.

The Tricare budget drain

Article Abstract:

Funding from base hospitals, readiness and other programs has been pulled due to mismanagement of military health care budgets by the Clinton Administration. Inadequate funding of the military's network of clinics and hospitals pushed more and more patients to use Tricare civilian providers.
