Article Abstract:

The flight of Maj. Kermit L. Haderlie, a student of Air Force's Aerospace Research Pilot School, saved others lives during a zoom climb mission to the edge of the Earth's atmosphere, but it cost him his own life. The Lockheed F-104C Starfighter was the first operational fight capable of speeds higher than Mach 2, which set both speed and altitude records, and Haderlie used the non-rocket-assisted F-104, which was limited to climbs to 80,000 feet.
