Engineers who are planning to Remix and reissue master sound recordings must decide whether to use the original sound or to change the sound to appeal to particular audiences. Some engineers decide that a middle road is best. Mobile Fidelity soundlab's founder is investing heavily in a new CD mastering chain to produce better sound.

Mixing it up: the modern art of studio recording

Studios use many techniques to enhance the quality of sound recordings and add special effects. One common technique used is multitracking, in which different voices and instruments are recorded on separate tracks. Other techniques include overdubbing, reverberation and microphone placement.
