Beyond computers in computer security

Article Abstract:

Bruce Schneier, a computer scientist, author and cryptographer, has converted his computer security consulting practice into an Internet "alarm" service, Counterpane Internet Security Inc. Based in San Jose, California, the company is modeled much like a traditional security alarm service, where contracting companies' computer systems are physically monitored for possible break-ins and hostile attacks by hackers. Schneier says that companies shouldn't depend only on software, authentication, encryption and firewalls to protect their computers, arguing that every technology has a built-in flaw that can be overcome. Though data security firms have been providing services to large corporations and the military, the continued expansion of the Internet is creating a growing need for sophisticated computer security.
