Preparing for the GST bug

Article Abstract:

The Australian Goods and Services Tax (GST) may not cause as much concern in industry circles as the year 2000 computer transition problem, but it will force managers to update software and alter computer purchasing decisions. Software applications will have to be written to account for tax payments. Computer hardware and software purchases may be postponed to take advantage of lower GST rates.

A grown-up approach

Article Abstract:

Looksmart is Australia's top web directory, and has established its product not through its image but through being useful. The directory is popular with women because it is structured around a mainstream consumer perspective and does not contain pornography. Much recent investment in the US based Looksmart has come from Australia, suggesting Australians are ready to support Internet companies.

AM, FM, ho hum

Article Abstract:

Digital radio is able to carry text as well as sound and pictures, all without interference. Australian broadcasters are preparing to construct 5 digital radio transmission towers around Sydney before 2001. Initial set cost, each with a small visual screen, is estimated at $1500-2000, but that price should decline as it has in the US. Transmission is limited to line-of-sight.
