AOL, Time Warner pledge cable 'open access'

Article Abstract:

The pledge was made by both of the companies' CEOs during a hearing conducted by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Feb 29, 2000. The Federal Communications Commission hailed the promise as a significant step in addressing the 'open access' problem.

AOL, Time Warner, to defend deals before EC

Article Abstract:

Time Warner and EMI Group will appeal their merger to European Commission (EC) regulators in hearings that will begin on Sep 6, 2000, while America Online and Time Warner will argue for their $130-billion merger with these regulators on Sep 8, 2000. The companies are expected to echo arguments presented to US regulators the FTC and FCC. The firms are expected to face a skeptical EC, which believes the firms could box out rival news and entertainment companies and Internet service providers.

AOL-Time Warner deal likely to get EC's OK

Article Abstract:

America Online's (AOL) $130 billion merger with Time Warner has been approved by the European Commission (EC). The condition given was for AOL to cut its ties with German media giant Bertelsmann. AOL has given the proposal for Bertelsmann to divest its stake in AOL Europe to ease the EC's concerns that the merger would create a dominant digital carrier of music and other media. The EC is not expected to insist on other concessions.
