Real dealmakers weren't CEOs

Article Abstract:

The merger between America Online (AOL) and Time Warner was not the direct result of negotiations between the CEOs of both companies but through the efforts of two relatively unknown employees. AOL was led by lawyer Steve Chase while Time Warner was represented by Richard Bressler, head of its Digital Media Division. Both men are now part of a four-man transition team that is working to assimilate 82,500 employees into the new company.

Critics and customers such as GartnerGroup, Novell and Dell Computer CEO Michael Dell have expressed their concern over Windows 2000's ability to work with existing applications, the presence of a security flaw in the program and the growth of Linux, a competing operating system. The criticism has been devastating to Microsoft who is banking on the product to transform it from a PC-centric company to one that is Web- based.
