Shortage, not price, would stir reactions

Article Abstract:

The inavailability of gasoline, compared to simply higher prices, will elicit a more emotional outburst from US consumers. Analysts said that such episodes, as in the gas shortages of 1973 and 1979, nearly destroyed the US car industry and required the intercession of the National Guards to keep the peace. However, economists agree that members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries will not allow a repeat of the shortages as it could trigger a worldwide recession.

Northeast to face heating oil shortage

Article Abstract:

A problem worse that the record-high gasoline prices is looming in the East Coast. Their supply of heating oil for winter 2000 is only 15.3 million barrels which is way below their supply of 41.3 million barrels in Jun 1999. Federal authorities are concerned that shortages in 2000 may be worse than in 1999 when a healthier inventory could not prevent supply problems and high prices in winter. The low supply of heating oil is attributed to the desire of refiners to produce diesel oil, which can be sold immediately at high prices, than heating oil which would not sell for months and would not command big prices unless there is a harsh weather condition.
