Media vs. Web in digital copyright war

Article Abstract:

A group of media practitioners and sports and news organizations have banded together to address the issue of digital piracy over the World Wide Web. The Copyright Assembly, whose creation was announced on Feb 16, 2000, has expressed its concern regarding Internet-based 'illegitimate intruders'who are stealing copyrighted materials. Members of the group include NBC, CBS, ABC/Disney, Paramount, MGM, Time Warner, Sony, the Directors Guild of America, Universal, the Writers Guild of America and all the major sports leagues.

Digital video discs paying big DVDends

Article Abstract:

The digital video disc technology is being adopted by more consumers, video chains, and large motion picture production studios in Hollywood, CA, upon the advent of the Christmas season. Tomorrow Never Dies director Roger Spottiswoode noted that filmmakers are also developing an appreciation for the larger amount of space available on a digital video disc. CyberTheater co-editor/publisher Bill Cruce observed that the format has become an acceptable alternative to tape and laserdisc. The digital video disc player can be connected to personal computers and television sets alike.

Local signals to arrive via satellite

Article Abstract:

Satellite television firms will be able give customers an alternative to cable TV after an amendment was passed by the House of Representatives to allow satellite TV companies to transmit local signals. The provision is expected to also get Senate approval, although the issue of the $1.3- billion loan will still have to be tackled. Satellite TV companies have been waiting for a legislation in as their right to transmit to local stations would expire at the end of 1999.
