At Home files for bankruptcy; will sell a unit

Article Abstract:

Internet access provider At Home has filed for bankruptcy and is selling its broadband business to AT&T, which owns 23% of At Home, for $307 million. In the wake of the high technology sector's free fall and great losses from online ads, At Home's chief executive Patti Hart did assure customers that service would continue as the company restructures. Cox Communications and AT&T will continue offering broadband service to At Home's customers. At Home's other mistake might have been an optimism over growth of the cable access business. Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin will handle the bidding for At Home's assets.

U.S. inquiry is under way on online music business

Article Abstract:

The Justice Department Antitrust Division has sent subpoenas to recording companies for an investigation into anticompetitive actions within the online market. Major record companies have come together to create Pressplay and MusicNet, online music services. 5 of the companies control 80% of the U.S. market. Napster praised the Justice Dept. and other critics feel the probe is welcome considering how easily the major companies have already begun to corner the market on Internet music distribution.
