Airline might face fleet limit

America West Airlines, the ninth-largest carrier in the US, is facing a cap on fleet expansion. The Federal Aviation Administration is considering restricting the number of planes the Phoenix, AZ-based airline operates because of concerns over the company's maintenance capability. While the airline never had a fatal crash in its 16-year existence, it was slapped with a $2.5 million fine by federal regulators in Jul 1998 for violating air-safety regulations.

Air-safety penalties jump 80%

Article Abstract:

A study by the publication USA Today of federal records has found that US airlines were levied penalties worth over $9.4 million in 1999 for safety regulation violations. The figure represented at least an 80% increase over the 1998 level. The 1999 total will likely be higher because the Federal Aviation Administration witholds data about security cases that were opened during 1999. The 1999 figures also include violations that were committed before 1999.

Audit to see how airlines treat fliers

Article Abstract:

Inspectors from the Department of Transportation have scheduled visits to headquarters of seven airlines to see how they are treating passengers. The carriers are Continental, Northwest, Southwest, American Trans Air, Aloha, Midwest Express and Hawaiian. The auditors have already visited American, Delta, United, TWA, America West, US Airways and Alaska. The department is expected to make a report to Congress by Jun 15, 2000.
