Upstart airlines supply live TV on the fly

Article Abstract:

JetBlue Airways of New York, NY, and Dallas, TX-based Legend Airlines, will offer 24-channel DirecTv satellite broadcasts to passengers. The broadcasts will include four ESPN channels, CNNfn, Discovery Channel and Learning Channel. JetBlue will install television screens at each of 162 seats on two Airbus A-320a for its JFK Airport-Fort Lauderdale route and charge $5 for the service. Legend will install television screens at each of 56 seats in four DC-9s and offer the service for free. Major airline company Alaska Airlines will test a similar system on one of its aircraft by summer 2000.

Web site funded by airlines faces antitrust scrutiny

Article Abstract:

A travel Web site funded by five of the major airlines is under investigation by the US Justice Dept for alleged anti-competitive practices. The probe, announced on May 17, 2000, is the agency's response to a request submitted by the American Society of Travel Agents, T2, the temporary name for the Web site, is being designed by Boston Consulting Group and is expected to offer online booking for over 30 foreign and local airlines.

Airlines merger infuriates many in Congress

Article Abstract:

Members of the US Congress has expressed their disapproval over a proposed reduction in the number of US airlines. In five hearings conducted by three congressional committees on the planned merger of US Airways and United, committee members noted that a merger would be beneficial only to the airlines and their investors. A reduction in the number of competitors in the industry, however, would greatly reduce the number of options available to the consumer.
