BUSH WOULD GIVE ILLEGAL WORKERS BROAD NEW RIGHTS

Article Abstract:

Pres. Bush advocates major changes in US immigration policy so that illegal immigrants can register for temporary worker status. This would allow them to secure employee benefits, and travel to and from their home countries without fear of not being able to return to the US. Bush also wants to increase the number of available green cards which presently stands at about 140,000. The president's proposals face a challenge in Congress where Republican legislators are concerned about establishing an amnesty program for those who have violated immigration law.
