Ballmer steers Microsoft down more practical path

Article Abstract:

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has steered the 25-year-old company in a new direction since being named chief executive officer. Industry observers and employees have noted that the company has become more open. Under Ballmer, Microsoft has sought common ground with everyone from venture capitalsts to small software firms. It also touts programs that work on everything from handheld devices and Web-enabled TVs to cellphones. Microsoft has also launched an 'Agility' ad blitz to woo big business to the Windows 2000 operating system and to dot-Net.

Snooping necessary, unapologetic Oracle CEO says

Article Abstract:

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison has declared that his company's use of a controversial detective agency to spy on its rival Microsoft Inc and its political allies was necessary. The firm hired the Investigative Group International to prove that the companies which claimed to be independent during the antitrust case against Microsoft were funded by Microsoft. Ellison's justification for his action was the scrutiny of advocacy groups who influenced public opinion in the trial.

Bill Gates won't be dethroned so easily

Microsoft Corp Chmn Bill Gates' standing in the software industry is not expected to be eroded by the company's initial defeat in its antitrust case against the federal government. Industry watchers credit Gates' talent and drive as attributes that will help ensure that the executive will not vanish into obscurity. On the contrary, Gates' stock is expected to rise even more in the event that Microsoft prevails with its appeal to the higher courts.
