Beetles lend urgency to softwood talks

Article Abstract:

The trade dispute between canada and the United States has been made more acute by the discovery of a widespread insect infestation in British Columbia timber. Vancouver, BC-based Canfor Corp., Richmond, BC-based Slocan Forest Products Ltd. and Vancouver, BC-based West Fraser Timber Company Ltd. are worried over an epidemic of mountain pine beetles in the region.

B.C. lumber strike tests mettle

The walkout by 12,000 workers from companies including Weyerhaeuser Co., Doman Industries Ltd. and International Forest Products Ltd., threatens the forecasts of modest recovery for British Colombia's lumber industry. The Industrial Wood and Allied Workers of Canada union says the strike involves pension money, vacation time and shift scheduling.

Lumber firms push up prices after strike

Article Abstract:

Duncan, BC-based Doman Industries Ltd., Vancouver, BC-based International Forest Products Ltd. and Federal Way, Wash.-based Weyerhaeuser Co. and other lumber companies have been forced to stop operations due to a strike by forest workers. The strike, which has raised lumber prices, may involve as manay as 32,000 workers.
