Bell relaunches digital trial to test power of phone line

Article Abstract:

Bell Canada will again effect a six-month test in Oct 1999 to show how high-speed Internet access, telephone service and 140 digital TV channels can be offered simultaneously using a standard telephone line and latest technology such as the ExpressVu satellite system. The new trial, which will be conducted in a couple of apartment buildings in downtown Toronto, Canada, calls for the utilization of PixStream Inc's networking technology to receive TV signals coming from Bell ExpressVu's direct-broadcast satellite.

Lack of prepaid plan slows clearnet customer growth

Article Abstract:

Clearnet Communications Inc of Toronto reported that its new subscribers totalled 38,457 in the 1st qtr 1999, down from 46,920 in the 1st qtr 1998.;In contrast, its competitor Microcell Telecommunications Inc added 62,169 subscribers, from 31,500 from a year earlier. Around 70% of Microcell's new subscribers came from its Fidomatic prepaid service, while Clearnet remains the only Canadian wireless phone service company without a prepaid calling plan.

Bell testing wireless location service

Article Abstract:

Montreal, Que.-based Bell Mobility, which is also known as BCE Mobile Communications Inc., is developing a new wireless location service called myAladdin.com. Bell, which will offer the service to mobile phone customers to help them find directions, is working with La Jolla, Calif.-based NeoPoint Inc. to develop the service.
